Rhys Mathewson is a stand up comedian and writer who has wowed audiences across New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. After starting comedy at the tender age of 16, Rhys' quickly rose to comedy stardom, winning Best Newcomer at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival, and then becoming the youngest winner of the prestigious Billy T James Award and Fred Dagg award for best show.
Rhys has been a regular on NZ comedy panel shows like 7 Days, Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee, Have You Been Paying Attention? and Dancing With the Stars, where he was eliminated in 5th place because he contracted the novel coronavirus. He still reckons he would’ve won it.
In 2020 Rhys supported Jack Whitehall on his only New Zealand show at Spark Arena, playing for over 6000 people and in 2022 hosted of the biggest event of the NZ comedy calendar, the televised opening night gala of the New Zealand International Comedy Festival.
For the last 15 years Rhys has written for comedy and news shows, such as the 7 Days, The Project NZ, The Jono Project and Seven Sharp. He has written on over 1000 episodes of New Zealand television.
